JAVA is a non-profit organization founded in 1999 to fight for the welfare of abandoned dogs. It arose from the will of a group of people who like animals, saving them from the dangers of the street.
Through the Association shelters, they can watch over their health and treat them. Further actions are taken to control the litters, as well as finding new owners, through sterilization and adoption campaigns, respectively.

JAVA is located in Lourinhã, Lisbon district, approximately 45 minutes from the capital, with access via the A8 or N8.

In partnership, the Lourinhã municipality ceded a plot of land, allowing JAVA kennel to be built, seeking to be improved annually, sheltering animals in the best possible conditions.

At the moment it receives about 190 animals: females and males’ dogs of all races and ages.

The Association maintains its facilities, veterinary treatments, food and hygiene procurement, which survives with the quotas of the members who pay them and the benefactors who contribute.

In addition to an official loaned by Lourinhã City Hall, JAVA counts on (few) volunteers, essential in collaboration with the Association.

JAVA treats and cares for all, so that they regain their lost dignity by being abandoned, left in a ditch or attached to a pole by a cord.

The sterilization of females is one of the priorities, in order to minimize the scourge of the abandonment of animals in Portugal.

It is an unequal struggle that every day JAVA gives voice, fighting for those who do not have it and therefore cannot complain, of who insists on mistreating them, through the most horrendous forms.

In many cases it is not just the adoption of an animal that counts, it is also the respect and dedication to which you have the right, as a living being.

Privately held small shelter for few dogs and mainly cats. This shelter is held by one lady alone and she takes care of more than 30 cats and kittens. She has no funding and no help, which means everything goes from her own pocket. Nevertheless she has been able to save hundreds of animals from bad situations and offers them safe place for recovery. Even if the animal won’t be adopted, it is welcome to stay as long as needed, even as a permanent member of the family.

Since Greece has a huge problem with stray dogs, and even bigger one with cats, it’s really a struggle with not good odds. The cats can easily catch diseases from other cats and almost every week there is a new member in the cat clan. Some of the cats are very social and sleep inside the house with the dogs, or in the cool sea air at the veranda. But some cats are a bit feral and prefer to be left alone.

The house has several feeding places, where the cat have access to as much food as they want and to some comfortable bedding. There is also shade from the burning sun and shelter from the cold winds. These cats really need all the help they can get, since they have already seen the bad side of the street life and finally can have some security and safety.

Kitty foster Crete is privately run and funded house for kittens that need constant care. All of the kittens come in bad conditions, usually less than 2 weeks old, which means not everyone will survive. It is extremely hard to take care of a young kitten, that still needs milk, that is dehydrated, full of worms and ticks and basically given up. But the Kitty Foster does everything they can for them and at least give them a chance.

The kittens stay in small boxes, until they are old enough to move into cages. The organization uses the boxes because the kittens can not be allowed to be in too hot, or too cold environment. With fans and heating pads they regulate the temperature according to each kittens needs. When they are old enough to eat on their own, they move them to bigger cages that have more space for climbing, playing and running around. When they have at least 1 vaccine, have had parasite treatment and show no signs of illness, they can have free access outside.

The area is far from busy roads and the cats have olive field after olive field to play around and bake in the sun. But even if the garden and outside area are perfect in a way for the cats, they do need homes. Since they are bottle fed, they usually become highly social and yearn the company of people. Some of the cats even know how to sit and heel! The best thing in world is to curl to your lap and start baking gently, giving small kisses to your fingers. And the purring never stops!

A shelter that has been running for almost 10 years now. Gouves Animal shelter is dedicated to help the strays in the island and reduce the stray population. Gouves Animal shelter does constant work to sterilize the dogs that come to their care, as well as the ones in streets. The main goal is to try and get the government to knowledge the problem and participate in the solution. Right now the shelter has an understanding with the local municipality and is working hard together to make programs for free or cheap sterilizations.

The shelter is under constant change, as they try to make it better and better for the dogs. Because they does not get any funding or supplies for new kennels, they slowly raise money and rebuild the parts that need it. Gouves Animal shelter has about 200 dogs, some old, some puppies, and most come in sick. They have constantly need for food, medicine and donations, since the shelter does not get any financial help from the government. Still they try to manage to get every single dog that comes in to a vet check, give needed medications and treatments and of course sterilization, microchips and vaccines.

Until recently Gouves Animal shelter did not have any help, except the volunteers. The owner and starter of the shelter is an old man, Manolis, who works there 365 days in a year, 12 – 16 hour days, without any rest or weekends. Because of his fading health the small volunteer group, that tries to help him, made a fundraiser, so he can have help for few hours every day, which will make a huge difference in the life of the shelter dogs as well as the owners. Other volunteers include 4 regular people, who all do what they can, while balancing between work and home life.

Private puppy shelter for unwanted and stay puppies. Hopes Puppy Foster specializes to help puppies in special need. Most of the puppies come as emergencys, they can be only few days, or hours old, injured or otherwise in need of special care.

Puppies come from different backgrounds, some are dumped in the trash, some are abandoned in dangerous places and some are too weak, sick or injured to survive in a regular shelter. No matter what the start in life has been, Hopes Puppy Foster will try to give them the best change possible, for a new life. This means offering a safe and warm home, veterinary care, good premium food and other things, that makes the changes of survival better. The amount of puppies we foster home takes at one time is limited, since most of the puppies need a lot of special care, medications, treatments or even feeding every few hours.

Fist when the puppy / puppies arrive, Hopes Puppy Foster takes them to the vet. After having specific instructions for each puppy, depending on their situation, they get a bath and parasite treatments. The shelter slowly starts to feed them according to their age and make sure, they have enough liquids (if needed then thorough iv). The puppies are kept in separate places, to prevent diseases from spreading, meaning each kennel has only puppies that were found together, which are usually siblings. When the puppy is healthy enough, it is time to start vaccinations and after the second vaccination, foster home begins to look for a real home. Third vaccine is given before the puppy goes to a new home, but after the second vaccination, chances look good for the puppy to survive.

The foster is private house, that is dedicated to help strays and animals in need. At the moment the Hopes Puppy Foster has 9 fosters, including 7 puppies and 2 adults. From time to time the foster might make exception towards adult dogs, if they too are in need of special care. These dogs might be very sceared, injured or getting ready to give birth, in which case the foster provides a safe and secure house for the time needed to recover from the hard life on the street.

All sizes Rabbit Rescue Society is an Edmonton and Area based rescue dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming feral and dumped rabbits in the Edmonton and surrounding area; as well as shutting down breeding operations in which the animals are kept in horrid and abusive situations.

To date, All Sizes Rabbit Rescue Society has had a hand in rescuing and rehoming over 600 rabbits, with that number swiftly going up.

It was founded over a year ago as a result of a feral domestic rabbit colony that had been around for over 30 years, that had been attempted to be rescued or killed multiple times with no success; over the course of approximately 9 months, the society successfully rescued over 250 rabbits, with hundreds more being born in care among the various rescues that were able to intake.

Since that initial colony rescue, the organization rescued two additional colonies, dozens more dumped Easter gifts, helped rescue and rehome over 60 rabbits from an ex-meat breeding farm and gearing up for another big intake from the next colony the society aims on rescuing.

All the funding of the All size Rabbit Rescure Society and support comes from amazing individuals who believe in what they do, and they give thanks to each and every person who donates one time, monthly and supports their fundraisers.

SOS Animaux is a Tunisian non-profit animal welfare society. It was founded in October 2007 by Dr. Raoudha Mansour, Veterinarian (and President of the association) and based in Nabeul. Since then, it has been operating as a non-kill shelter with the aim to save stray dogs and cats.

The second aim of the organization is to find permanent homes for the animals – either in Tunisia or abroad (in recent years, a lot of cats and dogs have been adopted in various European countries). However, fees are to be paid for animals to enter Europe (chip and rabies test on top of vaccination). The organization needs the support of kind people to be able to pay these fees.

All animals are vaccinated and sterilized. All veterinary care and surgeries are done by Dr Mansour free of charge.
The shelter’s ability to house more animals depends on its means. So, priority is given to the most urgent and or severe cases (handicaped/injured/sick). The number of animals housed in the shelter may vary (because some of them, mainly cats and kittens, are left anonymously at the entrance door of the shelter). As of June 2017, there are 60 cats and 30 dogs in the shelter.

The organization lives on donations, mostly from private donators.

Due to lack of means (whether human or financial resources), the society has not been able to achieve all its original ambitious objectives (educational, awareness, trap-neuter-return campaigns, etc.). So all the efforts are focused on finding means to sustain the shelter, which is always in need of dry pet food, cat litter filler (imported goods are much more expensive than in Europe), not speaking of pharmaceutical products for care and surgery. The society is also in need of improving the shelter facilities (doors/wire mesh fences…).

Daily cleaning and food distribution at the shelter are performed by a single worker. Health care is provided by an assistant under the supervision of Dr. Mansour, who herself pays him. Volunteer work is not recognized and practiced well enough in the Tunisian culture, so there are few volunteers. So SOS Animaux is seeking for foreign volunteers to come and help the shelter.

Bottyan Equus Hungaria is a family-owned foundation which was officially registered in 2001. It is the only shelter in Hungary specialized in rescuing old, abused and injured horses. Many dogs, cats and other domesticated animals also find a home in the shelter.
One of the main objectives of the shelter is to detect places where horses are kept under bad conditions endangering their health or even life.
The shelter strives to enlighten people and help them realize that animals can feel, suffer and love just like we, humans do.
Each person should learn how to keep and treat animals, get to know to their behavior, protect and take good care of them.
In addition to saving animals, organizing their rehabilitation and adoption, the main objective of the shelter is to teach children, youngsters and even adults to respect the nature and animals.
To fulfill the mission of the shelter, in addition to enthusiasm financial background has to be ensured too, which is especially difficult in case of such a small family, a non-profit organization.
Among other plans, the shelter is planning to renew the wooden parts of horse pens and the old part of the stable, as well as to enlarge the dog kennels, which would be equally important for the welfare of the animals. Unfortunately, the realization of these plans has to be postponed every year due to the low budget of the shelter.
