The shelter in Tallinn was opened on 1 July 2016, while the building itself was built on the funds the municipality of Tallinn. The shelter is administrated by the Estonian animal rescue organization Varjupaikade that has started its work in 2007 and has 6 more shelters, apart from Tallinn: in Viljandi, Parnu, Valga, Viru, Virumaa and Lanemaa.
The main goal of the organization is to help lost pets find their way home and find a new home for the homeless four-legged friends, while also providing all the necessary treatment, in order to reduce the number of homeless animals in Estonia.
Organization also strives to decrease the number of the new-born pets on streets by not only sterilizing but also by educating people about the importance of sterilization, using different campaigns. Several municipalities also help the organization by campaigning for chipping pets.
As always, every animal that comes to the shelter gets anti-parasite treatment, is vaccinated and chipped. Every adopted pet also gets castrated or sterilized.
Apart from giving shelter to cats and dogs, the member of Varjupaikade in Tallinn also homes small pets, such as rabbits, Guinea pigs and others, which can feel safe and at home here as well!
